At Brown’s Super Stores, we believe that everyone deserves access to fresh, nutritious food, regardless of their zip code. For years, we’ve taken a different path than most retailers, heading into neighborhoods often labeled as "food deserts"—low-income areas where access to a real grocery store was once a distant dream.
Jeff Brown was recently interviewed by economics correspondent Paul Solman on PBS NewsHour to discuss how we are turning these deserts into thriving community hubs.
Why "Good Intentions" Aren't Enough
Building a successful supermarket in an underserved area requires more than just a desire to do good; it requires a deep understanding of the community. As Jeff Brown noted during the interview, many efforts fail because they try to dictate what people should eat.
"You can’t tell people what to eat and you can’t open up a store and sell all healthy food, because nobody eats like that... you have to have some sweet potato pie!"
Our approach is different. We balance nutrition with tradition, ensuring our neighbors have access to fresh produce—selling as much in our urban stores as we do in the suburbs—while still offering the comfort foods our customers love.
